forts at cashel

There are two forts at Cashel: The Black Fort and the White Fort.  These forts seem to have been the headquarters of the O'Connor clan who came originally from County Tipperary to settle in Dungiven around 568 AD.  The O'Connor's were overthrown by the O'Cahans in the middle of the twelth century.

The Black Fort is one ringed, composed of sods and stone, situated on the north side of the high bank of the Roe.  It is on lower ground that the White Fort is north east of it.  The White Fort is a stone one, of one ring and commands a fine view of the surrounding countryside.  It is opposite the Tamniarin Fort, which is just across the river.  In 1884, near Cashel Fort, an earthen pot was found which contained four or five quarts of coins.  Also in this area, a copper coin of Emperor Nero, a copper coin of Queen Elizabeth dated 1601 and a silver half crown of James 11 dated 1690 were found.
