origins

The Benedy Community Association was formed in March 1996.  A group of local people came together with the idea of forming a community group.  The aim was to make the Benedy a better place in which to live and to enhance the lives, both socially and educationally, of all members of the community.  What the Benedy needed most of all was a focal point in which all their activities could be held.  With such growing enthusiasm and more people coming on board, it was decided to try and find a suitable location for a centre.

The community wanted a facility, namely a multi purpose building, which would meet the requirements.  Meetings were originally held in a shed, but later a small cottage was acquired.  It took almost three more years until the present site would be purchased and planning permission obtained.  A Constitution was adopted in March 1996.

Four years later, as a result of the hard work of the community in fundraising and voluntary work, the very generous financial help of the funding bodies and the support of the local council and agencies, they are now in the position of owning a beautiful Community Centre.  It was opened on 23rd February 2000 and is set on two acres of land, which includes substantial car parking facilities and disabled access.

The Community Centre is situated at the heart of the Benedy Glen, on the banks of the River Roe, with a panoramic view of the Sperrin Mountains.  It is hoped that the Centre will serve as an educational and social facility, with a view to future economic development.
